Psychologist vs Psychiatrist

Dear Dr. Roberta,
My doctor told me to see a psychologist. But, my health plan will only pay for a psychiatrist. What’s the difference?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in treating problems caused by your brain. The treatment usually includes medication. A psychologist is a mental health professional who does not prescribe medicine but uses other techniques, usually talk, to help you cope with problems.
