Dear Dr. Roberta,
My son is mentally ill and the teachers at his special school are insisting that I go to meetings with other moms whose kids have the same illness. I don’t see the point of it, but now the school psychologist is on my case about it, too. Why are they so concerned about my getting together with other parents?

Dear Puzzled,
Role models are others who are going through the same situation as you. When you observe role models you pick up helpful ideas and attitudes and you benefit by sharing information. Try it for a couple of meetings and if you don’t like it then you have every right to drop out.
