Dear Dr. Roberta,
No matter how hard I try to love my boy I cannot seem to adjust to his being handicapped. He’s almost a year old already and I still wonder why this happened to me. I don’t mention this to anyone, but I’m not sure if I love him. What can I do?
Unhappy, Florida
Dear Unhappy,
Get on the Internet and find several other mothers with kids just like your son. Also, locate a professional who is trained to talk to moms of kids born with disabilities. When you stop pretending that everything is all right and start talking about the problems you face you’ll feel better. After counseling and support group meetings most moms enjoy and appreciate their disabled children. Some, though, prefer to give up their child for adoption to a family that specifically requests a handicapped child. There are social workers who can help you with that, too. He deserves lots of love.
